Que to bank on familiarity of Wack Wack's layout

Angelo Que hopes to take advantage of his knowledge of Wack Wack Golf and Country Club's par-72 layout in the inaugural US$300,000 Solaire Open, which will be held this weekend at the East and West courses.

The 34-year-old Que, whose last Asian Tour win was in the 2010 Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters in Malaysia, ruled the 2008 Philippine Open also held at Wack Wack.

He's been aching to celebrate again after a three-year title drought and missing the cut of an Asian Tour event for the first time, the Chiangmai Golf Classic, in four events this year.

And Que believes that his new equipment, and a bit of luck, would help him win again in the Asian Tour after placing fourth in the season-opening Zaykabay Myanmar Open in February.

"So far I'm getting there with my new equipment. It is still early in the year. Every time you change equipment, you need time to adapt. I think I need a lot of luck to get my fourth win. I think anybody that wins needs it. You also need every aspect of your game to click," said Que.

He's been enjoying quality practice time with his new set of clubs since he is not getting younger. "(Age) is the one reason why I don’t exert so much effort in the driving range. I've always believed in quality and not quantity practice."

"I only spend time at the range when I’m working on something. If I don't have anything to work on then I just chip and putt (20 or 30 minutes) before I play. Ever since I was a kid I've been doing that. In the Philippines back then, a lot of courses didn't have driving ranges. It has been a routine since I was a kid so I didn't want to change anything," he added.

Local pros Frankie MiƱoza, Elmer Salvador, Jay Bayron, Antonio Lascuna and Miguel Tabuena are out to foil Que's title bid.

Australian Unho Park and three-time Asian Tour winner Mardan Mamat, the 2012 ICTSI-Philippine Open champion, lead the international cast.

The 2013 Solaire Open is the newest Asian Tour event sponsored by the newly-opened resort and casino in Manila.

Solaire Chief Operating Officer Michael D. French said sponsoring a golf tournament is a natural thing for their business. "So we like the possibilities that are presented to us of helping our golfers and all people who follow golf."

"Also, (Enrique) Razon, our owner, is an avid and passionate golfer. This is something that he's been supporting in the Philippines."

French added that the Solaire Open is one of the events that they have lined up this year that also include basketball and boxing.
