Jojo-Elma tandem steers Bombers

Jose Rizal University (JRU) again emerged champion of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 88 athletics competitions—thanks to the husband-and-wife tandem of national coaches Jojo and Elma Muros-Posadas.

JRU swept the field events to claim its third crown in the competitions held at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City.

John Mantua teamed up with brothers Mark Harry and Melbert Diones to help the Heavy Bombers compile 854.5 points. They beat the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (786 points) for the title.

The Mandaluyong-based school scored 627 and 752 points in the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

General Santos City-born Mantua, a Palarong Pambansa gold medalist, ruled the discus throw (40.61 meters) and shot put (13.56 meters).

Mark Harry Diones also contributed a gold medal in the high jump with his 1.95 meters effort, while older brother Melbert, who played his final year in the league, ruled the long jump with 14.52 meters and clinched bronze in the triple jump.

Melvin Calano topped the javelin throw (61.44-meters) while Aries Camporedondo and Edward Paler bagged a bronze each in the discus throw and shot put, respectively.

Jay Ebora, Aldrin Rey, Albert Valencia, Roldan Verano and Rudyfer Hernandez clinched silver and bronze medals in the other track events. Ebora and Verano bagged silver medals in the 400-meter hurdles and 3,000-meter steeplechase while Rey, Valencia and Hernandez collected bronze in the 400-meter run, 5-km walk and 3,000-meter steeplechase.

JRU will treat the athletics team to a three-day Singapore vacation. They will be joined by Athletic Director Efren Jose Supan, Elma and Jojo Posadas and assistant coaches George Noel Posadas and Rey Allan Porras.
