UAAP to release official rule book

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) board is planning to release an updated and official rule book to guide the league and avoid controversial issues like the new residency rule for high school students.

Henry Atayde, De La Salle University’s UAAP board representative, said the league plans to come out with the rule book before the end of the summer. The board plans to start fresh on the 76th season, which will be hosted by Adamson University.

"The UAAP has a rule book but it is a bit lose and unofficial. That’s why we will have a summer workshop involving all schools handling the 16 sports, where we plan to gather all rules and agree on what to follow. We will let all members sign the approved rules to make it official," said Atayde.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association, the oldest collegiate league in the country, has rules and bylaws given to all member schools.

"I could not comment on that since both leagues are different. La Salle is a former member of the NCAA," said Atayde. "All the rules will be posted on the UAAP website."

He added that there are a lot of amendments being made to eligibility rules that would make season 76 more exciting.

"I can't divulge all, but a lot of the news centered on the two-year. There's the issue of (Filipino-American players), why not call them Filipinos since they hold a Philippine passport but only studied overseas?"

Atayde said the UAAP board is open and ready to face the Senate inquiry being done by Committee on Youth, Women, and Family Relations chairman Senator Pia Cayetano.

Cayetano asked UAAP board members to attend the hearing last week but moved the inquiry to April 1 since league officials are unavailable.

"We did not boycott the inquiry. (Sen. Cayetano) sent us the letter on (April 1) but we still have a meeting on (April 3). We told the Senate that we are going to go but not on (April 4),” said Atayde.

The UAAP rules committee is recommending to the board that the residency period for high school transferees be increased from one to two years after the planned transfer of Far Eastern University high school standout Jerrie Pingoy to Ateneo.

Atayde said there’s still a lot to be discussed before the implementation of the new rule this season. “We have to clear the implementing rules and guidelines. We don’t want to discuss everything in public. We’ve been very quiet, we practice professionalism.”
