NCAA stars to shine in 89

College of Saint Benilde (CSB) formally started its hosting duties for the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season when the Taft-based school received the league flag during Tuesday night’s turnover ceremony held at Letran College’s St. Thomas Hall.

Incoming NCAA policy board president Bro. Dennis Magbanua, FSC, who will also formally assume the post of CSB president on May 15, received the flag from Fr. Tamerlane Lana, OP, of outgoing Season 88 hosts Letran.

Lana said they at Letran now have a sense of relief and gratitude for hosting Season 88 as they have done their best to cope with the expectations of all NCAA fans.

"We had the opportunity of bringing the league into the consciousness of more fans. The NCAA is a national student league that contributes to the development of our Filipino youth athletes,” said Lana.

Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, the Season 88 Management Committee chairman, said the last year saw many firsts for the league like having a new media partner in AKTv, holding beach volleyball and basketball games outside of Metro Manila to bring the league closer to the fans, and adding women’s swimming, badminton and soft tennis to the calendar of events.

Magbanua, on the other hand, said CSB hosting the 89th season was timely since the De La Salle Philippines-run school will be celebrating its 25th year as a learning institution.

"It will be hard to match or even surpass Letran’s hosting but CSB is ready to host the 89th season. We will not let you down. We promise to keep the NCAA as the number one league that develops student athletes’ values of sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie,” said Magbanua, who also announced that the league has formally accepted Arellano University as a regular member.

"We found out that Arellano’s performance through the years was very satisfied after careful evaluation of their athletes’ skill levels and their commitment to the league. Emilio Aguinaldo College and Lyceum remain as probationary members and we will again evaluate them after two to three years,” added Magbanua.

Peter Cayco, Arellano’s representative to the NCAA Management Committee, welcomed the school’s new status in the league. “This is the fruit of the many years we labored. We continue to strive for excellence every year. We will work on our strengths and improve on our weaknesses for the coming season.”

Magbanua said a school that wants to join the NCAA will be given a three-year probationary status and it can be extended to one to two years depending on their performance and the school seeking membership must also field teams in all events.

The NCAA currently has 10 schools as members, namely, Letran, CSB, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, Jose Rizal University, San Beda College, San Sebastian College-Recolletos, Arellano, EAC, Lyceum and Mapua.

The 89th NCAA season, with the theme Our Stars will Shine, opens on June 22 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
