Against all odds

De La Salle University's pair of Sunshine Baraquiel and Eric Gallardo overcame all adversity they encountered to rule the recently concluded 6th Intercollegiate Golf Championships held at the Sherwood Hills and Eagleridge courses in Trece Martires, Cavite.

La Salle defeated a gallant Lyceum of the Philippines University in a sudden-death playoff in the final game at the challenging Faldo course at Eagleridge. The Green Archers and Pirates head into the final game tied at one game each.

The Green Archers, who had a successful 75th University Athletic Association of the Philippines season capped by winning the General Championship, won its fifth overall crown in the six-year history of the tournament.

The Taft-based golfers last won the title in 2011, their fourth straight crown, but Ateneo ended their reign last year.

La Salle nearly lost the crown after Baraquiel locked her car keys with her golf clubs inside while Gallardo, due to the extreme heat, suffered from nose bleeding.

Baraquiel managed to play at Sherwood after borrowing men’s golf clubs. Her spare keys arrived a little later in time for the sudden death tie break where she played using her usual set.

Baraquiel and Gallardo faced LPU’s Wolen Superal and Lawrence Celestino. Both pairs ended the first playoff hole, the ninth at Southwoods, tied.

Eagleridge hosted the final nine and both pairs proceeded to play even with the sun already starting to set. Baraquiel, in near darkness, rolled her putt over to the hole for a bogey to seal La Salle’s win.

Baraquiel and Gino Bunyi won the best ball format at Southwoods, 1-up, in a spirited 18-hole match against LPU’s Arjun Tinio and Korean Sean Lee.

The Pirates, behind Superal and Celstino, bounced back in the high-low match as they overcame a 3-up lead of Gallardo and Marvin Mendoza. Superal and Celestino took the last four holes for a 4&3 win with the matches moving to Eagleridge.

The sudden death tiebreaker, a first in the tournament, was also played at Eagleridge. Team captains of both teams nominated the pairs that will play in the tiebreak.
