Don't want to be in the spotlight

The people behind Shakey's V-League don't want to get involved in the Philippine Volleyball Federation's (PVF) ongoing leadership crisis.

Sports Vision chairman Moying Martelino, president Ricky Palou of Ateneo, and Shakey’s executive vice president and chief operating officer Vic Gregorio are one in saying that they wanted to only bring the sport closer to the fans.

"As much as possible, we don’t want to dip our hands in the ongoing leadership squabble in the (Philippine Volleyball Federation),” said Palou.

Palou is being eyed by a group, led by suspended PVF secretary-general Vangie De Jesus to replace embattled president Gener Dungo.

"The issue is a matter that needs to be discussed within the (national sports association),” Martelino added.

De Jesus’s group is calling for Dungo to step down as they claimed that the PVF chief has not implemented a single grassroots development project and failed to sustain the formation of a national team that would compete in international tournaments like the Southeast Asian (Sea) Games.

The Philippines, after winning a bronze in women’s volleyball in the 2005 Manila Sea Games, has not competed in three previous editions of the biennial sporting conclave.

The men’s squad last won a medal, a bronze, in 1991 with Manila as hosts. It was the men’s team’s fifth medal—a silver and four bronzes—while the women’s side collected six golds, three silvers and two bronzes behind perennial champion Thailand’s 10-2-1 haul.

"We would rather continue to support volleyball through the Shakey’s V-League. Like all stakeholders in the PVF, we want to have a long-lasting solution to its problems,” said Gregorio.

"The work will not be easy, but we are really committed to helping. There’s a way we can help and will help in the background,” ended Palou.
