PSC chief to Incheon-bound athletes: Surpass three-gold haul

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Ricardo Garcia is challenging athletes that will make it on the official delegation to surpass the country’s 16-medal haul in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in China.

Filipino athletes collected three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals during the November 12 to 27 16th Asiad to finish 19th overall in the Asian region’s quadrennial sporting event.

“I am calling those who have already made it to the country’s official delegation to the Asian Games and to those still aspiring, to train seriously so we can improve and surpass the three gold medals that the Philippines won in 2010,” said Garcia, who is also the country’s Chef de Mission to the 2014 Asiad.

The 17th edition of the Asian Games is set from September 19 to October 4 in Incheon, South Korea.

One hundred and 42 athletes, from 19 sports, have already passed the criteria set by the joint Philippine Olympic Committee (POC)-PSC Asian Games Task Force including the team sports of basketball (12), rugby (12), and softball (15), athletics (10), boxing (8), taekwondo (12) and bowling (12).

Garcia said they are predicting five to six gold medals can be won by Pinoy athletes in Incheon based on the country’s performance in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.

He added the PSC has allocated P50 million to fund the overseas training of all qualified athletes aside from the P30 million that they allotted for the country’s participation in the 17th Asiad.

“We are doing this to show, to our athletes and our countrymen, that we are serious with our Asian Games preparations. We’re expecting all our athletes to perform the way we expect them to,” Garcia said.

The PSC chief also reminded all national athletes to join the 2014 POC-PSC Philippine National Games slated from May 16 to 25 in Manila.

“The PNG is crucial because they will lose their priority athlete status if they failed to participate. And they can also lose their national team spot if they lose in their respective events. My advice to everyone is not to be complacent go. Kailangan ma-maintain nila ang kanilang standing or else.”
