Nietes eyes KO win over Fuentes

Donnie Nietes is confident that this time he will knock out Mexican Moises Fuentes when he makes his fourth title defense of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight crown on May 10 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

This will also be a rematch of their March 2, 2013 12-round bout at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Cebu City that ended in a majority draw after two of the three judges—Adalaide Byrd and Pat Russell—saw the fight tied at 114 while Danrex Tapdasan scored it in favor of Nietes, 115-113.

The 31-year-old slugger from Murcia, Negros Occidental (32-1-4, with 18 knockouts) said that he has been looking forward to this fight where he hopes to silence the Mexico City-born Fuentes (19-1-1, with 10 knockouts) in front of his countrymen.

Nietes said that his almost four-month-long training camp, including two months in the United States, will finally pay off.

“Malaki ang tiwala ko sa sarili na mapapatumba ko na siya [Fuentes] talaga. Talagang todo at seryoso ako sa ensayo dahil gusto ko siya mapabagsak ngayon,” he added.

Nietes said his team made some minor changes in his training as he vowed to remain aggressive against the 28-year-old orthodox boxer.

“Sa part ko, magiging aggressive ako sa kaniya pero may halong ingat na din. Tapos iyong style ko sa pag follow through ang dapat kailangan ko na ma-improve,” said Nietes. “Iyong mga jabs at power punches ko mas matinik na ngayon compared sa kaniya.”

Nietes tapered down with his training in Cebu City where he is slowly reducing his 117-pound weight to 108 lbs, which is the limit in the light flyweight division. “Kaya ko naman ma-meet ang weight limit. Nasa 116 hanggang 117 lbs ako nung nasa US kami.”

Nietes is on a 21-fight winning streak, including three draws, since suffering a split decision loss to Indonesian Angky Angkotta (27-10-1, with 14 KOs) on September 28, 2004, in Jakarta. He is coming off a third-round KO win over Sammy Gutierrez of Mexico (33-10-2, with 23 KOs) in November last year.

Fuentes, meanwhile, won seven of his last eight matches and is fresh from scoring a seventh-round technical KO of countryman Omar Salado (24-7-2, with 15 KOs) also in November last year in Baja California, Mexico.
