To beef up country's training pool

Strengthening the country's national training pool is one of the goals of the Milo Little Olympics, which kicks off its inaugural leg in Cebu City.

Milo Sports Executive Robbie De Vera said they want the three-leg Little Olympics to be another venue where young athletes, who dream of becoming national team members, can compete at a higher level.

"We want to maintain a high level of competition just like in the Batang Pinoy, Palarong Pambansa, and the [Private Schools Athletic Association] that is why we want to continuously improve the program," said De Vera.

De Vera added that the Little Olympics is a testing ground for some athletes that joined Milo's various summer sports clinics.

He added that helping find a future Olympic gold medalist is another goal of the said sports program that is why 10 of the 13 events are being played in the quadrennial event.

"Only chess, scrabble, and sepak takraw are the non-Olympic events. We want to also develop the mental well-being of the person aside from the physical aspect."

Athletics, badminton, basketball, football, gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball are the other events to be contested.

The Cebu City Sports Complex in Cebu City will be hosting the Visayas leg from August 16 to 18 and 24 to 25 while the Mindanao stop will be at the Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center in Cagayan de Oro City on August 23 to 25.

The National Capital Region leg will be held at the Marikina Sports Park in Marikina City from August 30 to 31 and September 1 and 7 to 8.

The National Finals, where the top three schools both in the elementary and high school boys' and girls' divisions in all 13 sports will be competing, will return to Cebu from October 25 to 27.
