Pacquiao begins training camp after promo tour

Manny Pacquiao's three-month-long preparation for his November fight against Brandon Rios begins in the middle of the month right after the Sarangani province Representative arrives from a whirlwind seven-city promotional tour.

The 34-year-old Pacquiao (54-5-2 with 38 knockouts) will take on the Lubbock, Texas-born Rios (31-1-1 with 22 KOs) in a 22-round non-title bout on November 23 at The Venetian Resort's 15,000-seater CotaiArena in Macau, China.

The Venetian hosted the inaugural promotional tour last Saturday. Both fighters had the chance to see Tiananmen Square and the world-renowned Great Wall of China when they made their stop in Beijing on Monday and Tuesday.

Pacquiao's spokesperson Rose Tamayo, in a text message to the BusinessMirror, said the former pound-for-pound king will start his training camp in General Santos City within the week of August 12 after taking a few day's rests once he arrived from Los Angeles, the final stop of the promo tour.

Team Pacquiao, with the Filipino boxing icon's assistant trainer and long-time friend Buboy Fernandez, is aiming to focus on Pacquiao's advantages over Rios, and improve on the things that catapulted him into international stardom and avoid the mistakes that caused him to lose his last two fights.

Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, in a previous interview, said that if he had his way he would put Pacquiao back to the old program when they first teamed up for the Miguel Cotto fight in 2009.

Ariza, however, did not work with Pacquiao, who won eight world titles in eight different divisions, with his last two fights that resulted in back-to-back losses against Timothy Bradley Jr. (who lost his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown by split decision) and Juan Manuel Marquez (sixth-round KO).

Those consecutive setbacks ended the southpaw boxer's five-fight winning streak. His last loss, before dropping two matches, was a unanimous decision defeat against Erik Morales on March 19, 2005.

The 27-year-old Rios, after 13 straight wins, is also coming off a unanimous decision loss to Mike Alvarado for the interim WBO light welterweight crown on March 30.

Pacquiao, Rios, and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum ended their China tour at the Four Season Shanghai in Shanghai on Wednesday. The tour will head to Singapore for a private event at the Marina Bay Sands on Saturday before heading to the United States.

Both fighters, where their respective trainers Freddie Roach and Roberto Garcia will join them, begin the tour's US leg when they visit the ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut on Monday, August 5.

New York will be their next stop at Jong Fong Restaurant on August 6 before ending the barnstorming on August 8 at The Beverly Hills Hotel's Crystal Ballroom in Los Angeles.

Pacquiao is expected to be back in Manila on Friday, August 9, and will take a few days' rests before opening up his training camp.

The low taxes in Macau and its closeness to the Philippines were some of the reasons why Pacquiao and Arum chose to bring the fight to Asia.
