Altas, Bombers collide with win No. 2 in mind

University of Perpetual Help System Dalta coach Aric Del Rosario believes his Altas do not hold any advantage and are evenly matched with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers as they shoot for their second straight win in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.
"We are evenly matched. Wala naman akong itinatagong players. Kung ano ang line-up namin sa Filoil (preseason tournament) iyon na ‘yun,” said Del Rosario, who will try to steer the Altas against the Heavy Bombers in the 6 p.m. main game of a scheduled double-header on Monday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Both Perpetual Help and JRU won their respective opening day matches against separate foes. The Altas are fresh from a 69-49 rout of Emilio Aguinaldo College last Thursday while the Heavy Bombers kicked off their campaign with an 83-72 drubbing of Mapua.
Veterans Earl Thompson and Harold Arboleda, along with Nigerian big man Nosa Omorogbe and rookie Juneric Baloria are again expected to lead the offense for the Las PiƱas-based squad.
“Good thing they stepped up. Sa depensa at sa opensa, lahat nagtutulungan,” said Del Rosario, who guided the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers to four straight titles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines that included a historic 14-0 record in 1993.
Welcome news for Del Rosario and Altas’ fans is the expected return of Nigerian import Femi Babeyemi, who missed Perpetual’s season-opener due to a back injury.
San Sebastian College also shoots for win number two when the Golden Stags face the Atoy Co-mentored Mapua side in the 4 p.m. first game.
It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals will defend Stags’ rookie John Ortuoste after the Antipolo City-born guard erupted for 44 points in San Sebastian’s first two games.
“Everyone in the team can score and erupt offensively. I have to also adjust on the defense and look for my teammates,” said Ortuoste in Filipino after the Stags’ 78-76 win over the Arellano University Chiefs last Thursday.
In the junior play, the Staglets open the day’s hostilities when they face the Mapua Red Robins at 12 noon while the Altalettes take on the Light Bombers at 2 p.m.
