One La Salle

The Lasallian community is joining hands to help one of their own, Lim Eng Beng after the former King Archer was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis.

A mixed volleyball tournament is being planned after the Lenten break between several members of the three-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women's volleyball champion Lady Spikers and the La Salle men's basketball team.

Lady Spikers' Abi MaraƱo, Melissa Gohing, Ara Galang, Michelle Gumabao, Mika Reyes and Rochelle Sison, and the Green Archers' Jeric Teng, Arnold Van Opstal, Norbert Torres, Almond Vosotros, Yutien Andrada, Jason Perkins and Thomas Torres are the players who will be competing in the fundraising event.

Henry Atayde, La Salle’s representative to the UAAP board, said this is just one of the many things that the La Salle community is doing to help raise the P3 million that Lim needed for his liver transplant operation.

"For a guy who never drank alcohol, the La Salle community is very concerned about his situation,” said Atayde. “The alumni are already sending money to his bank account.”

Atayde added that Lim has a special place in La Salle’s sports program after leading the Green Archers to the 1974 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball title.

Atayde said Lim chose to play his final year with the Green Archers after being asked by the La Salle brothers if he could finish his eligibility years.

“At that time, there were offers for him to play in the MICAA [the predecessor of the Philippine Basketball Association]. He avoided all the richness that the teams are offering to him and gave us the championship," added Atayde.

It was La Salle’s fifth and last NCAA crown before moving to the UAAP in 1986.

Beng, an athletic director of a Chinese school in Manila who manages his family's hardware business, is part of La Salle's Time, Talent and Treasure Godfather Program.

"He got involved when when (Ambassador Eduardo "Danding") Cojuangco took over with the La Salle basketball team. He doesn't have the financial resources but what he does with the team is he inspires the players," Atayde said.

Beng, according to Tony Atayde, averaged 32 points a game when playing for La Salle back when there was still no three-point shot. He beat Letran's Ricky Pineda's single-game record of 52 points when he made 53 and 55 in his next two games.

Beng, who was a member of the Grand Slam-winning Crispa Redmanizers in 1983, is one of three former Green Archer whose jersey number (14) was retired by La Salle along with Ren-Ren Ritualo (4) and Kurt Bachman (33).

The details of Lim’s savings account are: Metrobank Plaza Sen. Gil Puyat Ave. Makati City 1200 branch, account holder Lim Eng Beng, account number 0163016281108, swift code MBTCPHMM and bank telephone number 8988000.
