Final partnership?

Team captain Abi Marano and Michelle Gumabao were two of the players that helped De La Salle University complete a three-peat in Season 75 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s volleyball tournament.

However, there’s a possibility that this would be the last time they played together this season since the latter is still undecided if she’ll be returning when the Lady Spikers shoot for a fourth straight women’s volleyball crown.

Marano, who shared the Season 75 Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors with Ara Galang, already confirmed that she’ll be playing her final eligibility year for La Salle giving the Taft-based spikers a reliable middle hitter when they defend the crown.

“I’ll take a long rest since it has been a long season for us. I’ll also concentrate on my studies since as a student-athlete you need to pass your subjects for you to be able to play,” said Marano after La Salle’s 25-23, 25-20, 25-16 Game Two win to remain the queens of the volleyball court.

Playing for the Philippine team also beckons for Marano as she’s among the collegiate players that were invited by Philippine Volleyball Federation Secretary-General Vangi De Jesus to try out. “I got invited but, I still have to work on my schedule. La Salle’s academic year is trimester.”

But while Marano has already plans after the season, Gumabao just wants to savor the moment and is still undecided whether to pursue a career in marketing or return for a final tour of duty with the Lady Spikers.

Gumabao, the five-foot-nine stunner who was named the Finals MVP, has already finished her four-year marketing degree at La Salle but is still eligible to play for one more season.

“I have one playing year left. And I have yet to decide if I would return or not,” said Gumabao. “I’m still not sure about next year.”

She thanked Marano and the La Salle fans for their support in and outside the playing court.

“Abi is always there for us as a team captain, a leader and a big sister. But being a leader is not a solo job for her, leadership is something we share. Especially for the younger players we need to step up to motivate them to step up,” Gumabao added. “I’m thankful to all La Salle fans, they went all out to support us.”
