Marquez looking beyond Pacquiao

Ageless Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez is thinking of challenging one of the other welterweight champions for his next fight later this year instead of facing Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao for the fifth time.

According to trainer Nacho Beristain Marquez (56-7-1, with 40 knockouts) is looking for a rematch against World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. or International Boxing Federation titlist Shawn Porter (24-0-1, with 15 KOs) as his next opponent when he makes his ring return.

"We are looking at the possibility of a fight for the welterweight title, but with another fighter,” the 74-year-old Beristain in an interview with Mexican newspaper El Universal.

This could be bad news for Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who is trying to lure Marquez into agreeing to face Pacquiao (56-5-2, with 38 KOs) a fifth time in what could have been one of boxing’s most storied rivalries.

A second fight between Marquez and Mayweather (40-0, with 26 KOs) is expected to rake in huge pay-per-view (PPV) after their first meeting on September 19, 2009, generated one million buys where the former suffered a 12-round unanimous decision loss.

Beristain added that he is no longer interested in seeing his ward fight Pacquiao a fifth time since Marquez had already proven himself when he floored the Filipino boxing icon in the sixth round two years ago.

"I hate for Marquez to face him [Pacquiao] again because they have fought 44 rounds. I think it’s already enough to leave intact his win than Juan had against Pacquiao, which was historic, and he doesn’t need to spoil what took place,” said Beristain.

Pacquiao and Marquez’s first meeting in 2004 ended in a controversial draw while the former defeated the Mexican by a split decision in their rematch after four years. Pacquiao again defeated Marquez via majority decision on November 11, 2012.

Their last bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on December 8, 2012—where Marquez scored a sixth-round KO victory—generated 1.15 million PPV buys, which is much higher than the 500,000 PPVs Pacquiao raked in when he faced Brandon Rios.
