Finals back to square one

It's back to square one in the 88th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball finals between defending champion San Beda and Letran.

The Knights, who like the Red Lions have won 16 men’s basketball crowns, forced the you-or-me showdown via a 64-55 win in Game Two on Saturday night.
Game Three is scheduled either on Wednesday or Friday at a still undetermined venue.
Letran used a balanced scoring attack and a choking defense to silence San Beda’s starters in the crucial stages of the match.
Knights coach Louie Alas finally defeated the Red Lions for the first time since his 70-69 triumph over the Mendiola-based squad on July 25, 2007, in the first round of the 83rd season.
Seldom-used forward Jonathan Belorio scattered 15 points, going three-of-three from three-point range, to pace Letran and also grabbed 10 rebounds. He had plenty of help from usual starters Kevin Alas, Jam Cortez, and Mark Cruz, who combined for 32 points. Dan Carlo Lituania, another backup shooting guard out of Jose Rizal University high school, also finished with 11 points.
Alas said he is happy with the win but all their efforts will be put to waste if they fail to bring the form they flashed in Game Two.
Alas, a three-time NCAA champion coach known for his tough defensive strategies, designed plays to limit the touches of San Beda big man Ola Adeogun and do-it-all guard Baser Amer.
Adeogun tallied 12 points, most of which he made in the third quarter when the Red Lions rallied from a nine-point first-half deficit. Amer, on the other hand, was held to nine markers after dropping 20 in the Red Lions’ 62-60 Game One win.
“You won’t beat San Beda with only one player scoring. You need five guys to play inside the court,” said Alas.
