PPSA looks forward to Florida world shootfest

If the Philippines' performance in the 2013 Australasia IPSC Handgun Championships is the gauge, Filipino shooters will be seeded for next year's 2014 International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Handgun World Shoot XVII.

A 139-strong Philippine team, led by veteran and 2004 Athens Olympian Jethro Dionisio, collected 63 medals—30 golds, 22 silvers and 11 bronzes—to rule the week-long event in Rotorua, New Zealand, which was participated in by 25 other countries.

The Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Florida, will host next year's World Shoot from October 7 to 19, where 88 countries, including the Philippines, will compete.

Philippine Practical Shooting Association (PPSA) president and Sultan Kudarat Governor Suharto “Teng” Mangudadatu said the expectation is for another excellent performance by Filipino shooters after a 63-medal haul in New Zealand.

"It was an excellent performance by the Philippines. We dominated the event, and this is an indication of another exciting performance in 2014 in Florida,” said Mangudadatu.

Filipinos are naturally good shooters. Although  we were not expecting to dominate the event since powerhouse teams from the USA and Australia also competed.”

The Philippines has been the top country in Asian practical shooting.

Bogie Castro and Edwin Lim, who also pocketed gold medals, said the result in Rorotua is the result of a united effort by Filipino shooters.

Dionisio ranked first overall for the Standard Division with 1992.4398 points, while Jeufro Emil Lejano took the lead in the Production Division with 1910.0408 points. Philipp Chua, also of Team Philippines, ranked first in the Revolver Division with 2032.3391 points.

The Philippine team topped the Classic Division (5484.3188 points, Junior Division (4604.0492 points, Production Division (5496.110 points, Revolver Standard Division (4255.7329 points, and Standard Division General Category (5708.6417 points).

Team Philippines members also finished strong in the individual categories, with Nelson Uygconco placing second overall in the Classic Division,  and Edcel John Ginoranking third overall in the Open Division. The team also copped second-place finishes in the Open Division General Category, Ladies Category and the Seniors Category.

Aside from the World Shoot, the PPSA—founded by former Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile in 1982—is also preparing to send teams to separate tournaments in Portugal and Pattaya, Thailand, this year.

The World Shoot consists of the Open, Classic 1911, Standard, Revolver and Production divisions in the Overall, Lady, Junior, Senior and Super Senior categories.
