The Year of the Filipino Flash


Call 2012 the Year of The Filipino Flash after good luck continues to shower Nonito Donaire Jr. when he announced that he is an expectant father to wife and taekwondo champion Rachel.

Donaire, who won all of his four fights last year that earned him several Fighter of the Year honors early this year, made the announcement during Monday’s broadcast of the local morning show Umagang Kay Ganda.

The four-division champion said he was ecstatic when Rachel told him that he is a soon-to-be father. Donaire’s wife is three months pregnant.

“This is bigger compared to all my past titles and Fighter of the Year awards. I have achieved what most of the fighters want to accomplish, but this is a bigger reward,” Donaire said in the interview.

The Donaires both wanted a boy.

“But what’s important is a healthy baby,” Donaire said.

“I want a boy so he can be a big brother to his little sister,” Rachel added.

Donaire is fresh from a stunning third-round knockout win against Mexican Jorge Arce last December.

Pacquiao out to restore fans' trust

Expect a quick ending as Manny Pacquiao plans to take the same approach as what he did against Ricky Hatton when he faces Brandon Rios for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) International welterweight title on November 23 at the Venetian Resort in Macau, China. The former WBO welterweight title holder is hoping to bounce back from consecutive setbacks to undefeated American Timothy Bradley Jr. (31-0, 12 knockouts) and Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, with 40 KOs). Pacquiao (54-5-2, with 38 KOs) was riding on a 15-match winning streak including that second-round KO win over Hatton on May 2, 2009.
